Acre the capital of the Crusader Kingdom
The amazing city of Acre
Acre was the capital of the Crusader Kingdom. During the kingdom’s final years, the knightly orders were in control of the kingdom. The Order of the Templars provided banking services to pilgrims who wished to visit the Holy Land, allowing them to deposit their money in Europe knowing it would arrive safely to the Holy Land. In those days, travelers feared robbers greatly. The pilgrims put the money in the safest place, depositing it with the powerful Knights of the Order. In return for the service, the pilgrims would pay a commission, leading the Order to amass great wealth. After the destruction of the Kingdom of the Crusaders and their removal from the country by General Baybars, the Knights of the Order moved to Europe. Philip, the king of France, who owed them a lot of money, decided to destroy the order. The order was disbanded and its leaders were executed after being accused of committing heinous crimes. The legends tell that the Knights of the Order got hold of King Solomon's hidden treasures which they found on the Temple Mount. Rumor has it that they are the ones who later founded the Freemasons, who were bankers in America.
In 1947 the members of the Etzel underground organization decided to take heroic action and free their comrades imprisoned in the Acre Citadel. Some of them were expected to be sentenced to death. During the planning of the escape, the friends dug an exit tunnel. They were amazed to find that under the ground were huge caverns. General Baybars failed in his attempt to destroy the capital of the Crusader Kingdom, so he covered it with sand instead. Fortunately, the sand covering acted as a preserver, providing us with a wonderful window into the kingdom of the Crusaders.
